Proposition 65

Proposition 65, also known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a California law that was approved by voters in November 1986. Its primary goal was to protect Californians from exposure to chemicals deemed toxic to the state's water sources.

Proposition 65 also requires that businesses selling products that may contain certain chemicals in excess of proscribed levels provide a clear warning of the potential impact. Proposition 65 is administered by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (COEHHA). COEHHA publishes a list of chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer or birth defects. This list is periodically updated and currently contains over 800 chemicals.

2018 Updates – New warning regulations that take effect on August 30, 2018 require more detailed product warnings and additional warnings placed on retailer websites/catalogs. We will work with vendor partners to ensure that products that require Proposition 65 warnings are labelled in accordance with the new regulations.
